Simien Mountains & Rock Churches of Lalibela - 13 days

Simien Mountains National Park
The Simien Mountains massif is a broad plateau, cut off to the north and west by an enormous single crag over 60 kilometers long. To the south, the tableland slopes gently down to 2,200 meters, divided by gorges 1,000 meters deep, which can take more than two days to cross. Insufficient geological time has elapsed to smooth the contours of the crags and buttresses of hardened basalt.
The Simien Mountains National Park presents dramatic scenery of volcanic plugs. Formed 40 million years ago it has eroded into fantastic crags, pinnacles and flat topped mountains towering over precipitous gorges, river valleys and plains stretching all the way to Eritrea.
There are many peaks are over 4000 metres with Mt.Ras Dashen at 4,620metres the highest in the country and the fourth highest in Africa.
The park is also famous for its Afro-Alpine flora and grasslands punctuated by Giant Lobelia and flowering Red Hot Pokers.
