Marlbrough Sounds

The Marlborough Sounds is situated at the northern most tip of the South Island of New Zealand and is one of the most remote but accessible wilderness native bush areas of New Zealand.

Marlborough Sounds is an accumulation of sounds, bays and coves that are rich in wild life, salmon and mussel farms. While some areas are accessible by road the majority of the Marlborough Sounds wilderness area is only able to bereached by boat.

Cruising and trekking the Marlborough Sounds is one of those trips that not only gives spectacular scenery but gives you the opportunity to participate in all the scheduled activities. Alternatively, you can just relax on board cruising from one bay to the next.

We will walk the “’Nydia Track’ witnessing giant rimu and nikau palms, maybe even some Tuis, Kiwis, Bellbirds and the rare South Island Saddleback.

This trip is a very diverse combination of relaxation on board enjoying evening sunset nibbles and visiting a winery (only accessible by boat), kayaking in Kenepuru Sound, visiting salmon and mussel farms, walking up to a lighthouse, visiting d’uuville Island and going ashore to the Wilderness Resort Café for afternoon tea.

There will be the opportunity to cruise through the French Pass on the way to the area where the sinking of the Russian Ship ’Mikhail Lermontov’ took place and even do some fishing if you so desire.

On arrival in the Queen Charlotte Sound we will visit ’Motuora Bird Island Sanctuary’ and walk three different sections of the ’Queen Charlotte Walkway’ taking in a waterfall at ’Ships Cove’ ( Captain James Cooks home in the 1700’s).
