Stewart Island Cruise & Trek - 7 days

Stewart Island
Stewart Island
We will cruise around the waters of New Zealand’s newest National Park – Stewart Island where only 2% is occupied by New Zealanders roads. As we will be based on a boat we are able to explore many areas of this magical remote island in comfort and in a very short space of time. Stewart Island is the most southern tip of New Zealand, with the next land mass stop being Antarctica
Flora, fauna and bird life
The tall forest trees are mainly kamahi, rimu, miro and totara. The forest under storey is composed of lancewood, coprosmas, tree ferns and broadleaf. Fuchsia is common around Halfmoon Bay and is one of New Zealand’s few deciduous trees. The nectar is a favourite food for tui and bellbirds. Ferns are an attractive and prominent feature of the forest. Many varieties can be found growing on the ground or hanging from trees.
A highlight besides the interesting walks that Stewart Island has to offer will be to visit Ulva Island bird sanctuary and enjoy the many great walks amongst the birds on this beautiful island.Stewart Island’s birdlife is often the sight of sooty shearwaters, gulls, Buller’s mollymawks, cape pigeons and little blue penguins, bellbirds, tui and parakeets, fantails, woodpigeons, shining cuckoos and even weka. The melody of kaka high in the trees calling is regularly heard. Grey warblers sing in the forest, particularly after rain, and tomtits are commonly encountered on the tracks.
We will be able to explore a number of golden un-spoilt beaches, discover the history of the island and learn of early whaling days, and if you desire -fish for blue cod.At night you may see the aurora astralis and some very colourful sunsets.
