Tibet, often known as the ‘Rooftop of the World’ was closed to outsiders until the mid 1980′s when it opened its treasures to tourist. The focal point of Tibet is around the sacred Mt Kailash, monasteries, temples and the holy city of Lhasa with the vast white and ochre fortress – Potala Palace. Lhasa the heart and soul of Tibet and is the object of devout pilgrimage in one of the world’s highest cities.
The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of the Buddhism faith is considered the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama and upon his death; the monks searched the land for a newborn child who shows some sign of processing his predecessor’s spirit. In 1950 the Chinese invaded Tibet and drove their spiritual leader into exile. Even though the Dalai Lama lives in exile many Tibetan people still continue to worship him and Buddhism, even more so since his acceptance in 1989 of the Noble Peace Prize.
Tibet is like no other country and on some trips we visit Mt Everest Base Camp from the Tibetan side which has a entirely different vista to the Nepali side.
