The southern part of Bhutan is tropical, and in general, the east of Bhutan is warmer than the west of the country. The central valley of Punakha, Wangdiphodrang, Mongar, Trashigang and Lhuntse enjoy a semi tropical climate with very cool winters, while Thimphu, Trongsa and Bumthang have a much harsher climate. Bhutan the Kingdom is known as “the land of the thunder Dragon” and stretches across all climates zones from sub tropical jungles in the south to the moderate heights of 2000 2,500 metres in the centre and up to the alpine Himalayas and glaciers. The northern region consist of glaciated mountain peaks with most being over 7,000metres above sea level with the highest being Kula Kanji at 7,553. The black mountains in central Bhutan form a watershed between to major river systems – the Mo Chhu and Drangme Chhu.
